# Expanding existing MSP accounts without discounting

Account expansion grows monthly recurring revenue by identifying gaps in a client's current capability set, mapping each gap to a business outcome, and presenting a staged proposal rather than a discount. The most reliable growth comes from clients who already trust your existing service delivery.

The fastest way to grow an MSP is usually the client base it already has. Existing clients trust your team, understand your ticketing process and have already budgeted for IT services. The mistake is to try to grow that base by discounting the same package. Discounting trains clients to buy on price and erodes the margin that makes service delivery sustainable.

## Map the account first

Before any proposal, build a one-page capability map for the client: what they have, what they are missing and what business outcome the missing capability would unlock. The map should cover security, continuity, compliance, cloud, support and advisory services. The gaps become the expansion pipeline.

## Find the outcome, not the feature

Clients do not buy backup because they like backup; they buy it because a ransomware incident would cost them the client’s own cost of downtime per day. Frame every expansion item as an outcome: reduced downtime, faster onboarding, audit readiness or lower insurance premium. When the proposal is attached to a number the client already cares about, price becomes secondary.

## Build a staged proposal

Few clients will approve a six-figure expansion in one meeting. Break the roadmap into three phases: quick wins, capability builds and strategic moves. Each phase has its own scope, price band and decision date. The client can approve phase one now and plan phase two for the next budget cycle without feeling pressured.

## Price for value, not hours

Hourly pricing makes every expansion look expensive. Outcome pricing ties the fee to a result. A security monitoring add-on becomes "ransomware detection and response for an agreed recurring fee per month". A compliance module becomes "audit-ready documentation for an agreed annual fee per year". The client sees a business result; you protect margin.
